Interconnecting Staircase

Interconnecting Staircase

Atwood Oceanics was my first project from beginning to end while I was at Gensler. The entire concept was based off of the company’s business of oil and gas, more specifically offshore rigs. Function and flow became the concept driving all design decisions back to the focus.

The monolithic interconnecting staircase was designed to mimic the drill pipes entering the water. The blue glass connected with a wave pattern and spider patch fittings kept the stairs refined yet industrial.

As a LEED certified project, I was responsible for the material selection and documentation as well. The counter tops in the break room were recycled Skyy vodka glass bottles and the entire communal area was focused around community and recycling.

The reception desk was a custom piece of a double compound radius constructed of cold pressed steel. The shape was inspired by the drill bit head of Atwood’s products.
